What is a Computer A computer is a piece of machinery that is used to produce articles, reports, pictures, web pages, databases, spreadsheets, etc, etc, etc. A computer is a tool that helps us produce what we want. Just like you use a car to get from A to B you use a computer to produce the things that you require. You don't have to know how the computer works to be able to use it. Computers are inherently stupid. All the computers in the world cannot match the power of a single human brain. Because computers are stupid, we need to be gentle with them and learn all sorts of rules and things to help them work. At Tides we try to make this process as simple and easy as possible, especially for the computers. |

Who uses the Computers All of the staff at Tides use the computers when working on projects at different times. The young people at Tides also help each other and the staff out with computer skills. So using computers at Tides is just part and parcel of the projects that everyone gets involved with. Computers? - no big deal !!

Be Gentle Remember to treat the computers gently, they are more frightened of you than you are of them. They can't help getting things wrong, its just that their little brains get confused. So with a little help and kindness we can get them to switch on and do what we want them to do.

What's Inside a Computer We'll let you look inside and tell you what the bits are if you are really interested. Getting to grips with the "hardware" - (that's the bits that you can feel or touch) is also part of what is offered here at Tides. Find out what floppies, CPU's, RAM, CDROM, DVD, parallel cables, mother boards, warm boot, cold boot, serial port etc are really all about. So if you find you are tripping over your mouse lead and landing on your graphic interface. Tides is a good place to go. |
